Using the Tutorials

How to find a tutorial, what the guided "where to click" spotlight does, and how a step knows you actually did it.
This is the summer 2026 guide.
Some of it has changed since. A new guide (v1) is being written.

Using the Tutorials

Open Tutorials from the playground home screen, or go straight to /tutorials.

Finding one

The left side is a menu, three levels deep: app (abantu, iwacu, …), then category, then directory — click down into whichever topic you want. The right side lists every tutorial that matches your current selection, as a card with its title, a short summary, and a Start (or Review, if you've already finished it) button. A filter box at the top narrows the list by title or summary text, on top of whatever menu selection is active.

If a tutorial assumes you've completed another one first, you'll see a warning naming it — a soft nudge, not a lock. You can still start out of order; some steps just might not work yet.

Taking a tutorial

The left panel lists every step; the right panel is the real embedded app, on the exact page that step is about. Read the current step's instructions, then act on the right — this is a real, live instance of the app, not a mockup.

The spotlight

Many steps highlight exactly what to click: a pulsing box around the real button or link in the embedded app, with a small label. Click the real thing underneath — the spotlight doesn't intercept the click, it just points at it. If a step has more than one thing to do in order, the spotlight moves to the next one automatically the moment you click the first.

If nothing lights up, the step just doesn't have a specific target — read the instructions and act normally.

Checks

Each step has a Check (or, for a few, just a Done — next step button when there's nothing to verify). Tapping Check asks the tutorial to confirm you actually did the thing — by reading the embedded app's real state directly (did a tree appear, did the URL change, is that text now on the page), never by trusting a click alone. If it doesn't pass yet, you'll see "Not yet" — finish the step in the pane on the right and check again.

Step 0 — Setup

Some tutorials show an optional Setup step before step 1, when they assume something time-consuming (a tree already existing, a community already joined). Tap it to skip straight to the part the tutorial is actually about, instead of redoing every prerequisite by hand. It's genuinely doing that prerequisite — joining the real test community, adopting the real protocol — just without you clicking through it yourself.

Teardown

Once you've finished a tutorial that has one, a Teardown button appears next to Restart this tutorial (greyed out until then — there's nothing to undo before you've actually done it). It reverses what the tutorial's own state represents, so you can run it again from a clean slate.

Your progress

Progress is tracked per tutorial, in this browser, and survives a reload. Restart this tutorial clears it and starts over from step 1 — separate from Teardown, which undoes the app state, not just your place in the tutorial.
